Greg Mortenson stumbled, lost and delirious, into a remote Himalayan village after a failed climb up K2. The villagers saved his life, and he vowed to return and build them a school. The remarkable story of his promise kept is now perfect for reading aloud. Told in the voice of Korphe’s children, this story illuminates the humanity and culture of a relevant and distant part of the world in gorgeous collage, while sharing a riveting example of how one person can change thousands of lives.

±1±: Best Buy This book is wonderfully illustrated and well written. I had already read the adult version of Three Cups of Tea so I could have been biased by my strongly positive impression of the adult version. However, bias aside, this is really nicely illustrated. And the story, while not as entertaining as pure fiction, is quite compellingly told. I read it to my 7 year old, and am also purchasing it for all three of my kids' classrooms as the end of year gift this year. I strongly recommend this book to all who want to educate their children in ways to make a difference in this world. on Sale!

The astonishing, uplifting story of a real-life Indiana Jones and his humanitarian campaign to use education to combat terrorism in the Taliban’s backyard

Anyone who despairs of the individual’s power to change lives has to read the story of Greg Mortenson, a homeless mountaineer who, following a 1993 climb of Pakistan’s treacherous K2, was inspired by a chance encounter with impoverished mountain villagers and promised to build them a school. Over the next decade he built fifty-five schools—especially for girls—that offer a balanced education in one of the most isolated and dangerous regions on earth. As it chronicles Mortenson’s quest, which has brought him into conflict with both enraged Islamists and uncomprehending Americans, Three Cups of Tea combines adventure with a celebration of the humanitarian spirit.

±1±: Best Buy If you would like to add texture to the Afghanistan and Pakistan you hear about in the news every week, then read this book. Greg Mortenson's story offers keen insight into the culture of traditionally insular and isolated people. His dedication to his mission is inspiring, and the book is a quickly paced read if you don't get too bogged down in the obscure tribal names and mountain ranges...HOWEVER
Upon finishing this book I found my admiration for Mortenson dulled and waning. To be certain, his myriad accomplishments are to be lauded.

But at what cost?

His wife and children are the silent sufferers in this book. It makes sense that this book fails to address this suffering at any depth--for all intensive purposes Mortenson is oblivious to it. His heart is so set on helping the children of Pakistan and Afghanistan that he leaves his own without a father.

In the end it comes down to each individual's value system. What is most important to you? Sure, Mortenson helped hundreds, perhaps thousands of children become literate and to him that was worth proffering his children and wife--to me that would not be a trade I would make, and so it's disheartening to read an account of someone who made the trade so easily on Sale!
